What is Graham-and-Doddsville?
Graham and Doddsville is a website dedicated to helping everyone to become better investors.

strategies, tools and resources necessary to manage their own investment decisions,
Here you will learn to better analyse and evaluate companies (or their stocks), particularly those
listed in the Australian stockmarket.
Where did our name come from?
The rather unusual name for the website is derived from the famous speech (later an article) entitled
"The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville" given by Warren Buffett on 17 May 1984 at the Columbia
University School of Business.
Honouring the 50th anniversary of Benjamin Graham and David Dodd's highly influential book, Security
Analysis, Buffett launched an attack on the Modern Portfolio Theory and the Efficient Market
Hypothesis by examining the consistent market outperformance of a select group of investors, all of
whom 'coincidentally' studied under the same teacher, namely, Graham.
Buffett dismissed the suggestion that these investors were merely the end product of something akin
to a coin-flipping contest – a supposed game of pure chance in the field of stockmarket investing:
"I think you will find that a disproportionate number of successful coin-flippers in the
investment world came from a very small intellectual village that could be called
Graham-and-Doddsville. A concentration of winners that simply cannot be explained by chance can
be traced to this particular intellectual village."
Buffett highlighted the 'common intellectual theme' of the investors of Graham-and-Doddsville as
simply being the search for discrepancies between the value of a business and the price of small
pieces of that business in the stockmarket. He also adds:
"If it doesn't make any difference whether all of a business is being bought on a Monday or a
Friday, I am baffled why academicians invest extensive time and effort to see whether it makes a
difference when buying small pieces of those same businesses. Our Graham & Dodd investors,
needless to say, do not discuss beta, the capital asset pricing model, or covariance in returns
among securities. These are not subjects of any interest to them. In fact, most of them would
have difficulty defining those terms. The investors simply focus on two variables: price and
value."
The original 'superinvestors' of Graham-and-Doddsville discussed in the speech / article were Walter
Schloss, Tom Knapp & Ed Anderson, Bill Ruane, Charlie Munger, Rick Guerin, Stan Perlmeter, as
well as Buffett himself.
Graham and Doddsville website aims to be the online home of value investing around the world.
